Incredible Gems Well, we've done all the groundwork for you. Here's a list of
the world's most amazing diamonds: Another extraordinary diamond is the colorless Cullinan I, or the "Great Star of Africa." The precious stone weighs 530.2 carats and is of nearly flawless color and clarity. While this stone is kept on permanent display as part of the British "Crown Jewels," the Cullinan I is just one of dozens of stones cut from the famous Cullinan diamond. The Cullinan, at 3,106 carats, is the largest rough diamond ever unearthed. The stone was discovered at South Africa's Premier Mine in 1905. The Cullinan II, or the "Lesser Star of Africa," was also cut from The Cullinan and weighs 317.40 carats. As if that weren't enough, the Cullinan has also produced 104 other diamonds. The Centenary Diamond, also part of the British Crown Jewels, weighs an impressive 273.85 carats. It took a master cutter three years to transform a 600-carat piece of rough into the world's largest modern-cut flawless diamond. If red is more your taste, then consider the largest fancy red, natural color diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America. This 5.11-carat red beauty was cut down from a 13.90-carat piece of Brazilian diamond rough. Those looking for a more patriotic diamond should consider the
"Uncle Sam" stone. The 40.23-carat stone was found at the Crater
of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Ark. Another incredible
stone, the 8-carat "Star of Arkansas," which was worn by Hillary
Clinton during her husband's first inaugural, was also found here.
Not to be outdone, workers at the first American diamond mine
in Kelsey Lake, Colo., recently unearthed an impressive, 28-carat,
yellow stone.
